Joseph A. Wyant, Sr.

Joseph A. Wyant, Sr. passed away January 2, 2012 at home, surrounded by his loving family.
Joe grew up in Atlanta, and graduated from Boy's High School in 1936. He recieved a scholarship to Harvard University, where he graduated cum laude.
After college, Joe volunteered for duty in the Ninth Air Force. He arrived in Egypt just a few days after the battle of El Alemein had ended, and then moved to England joining the intelligence unit. He was in the Eagles' Nest the night WWII ended, and was one of the first Americans to enter a newly liberated Dachau concentration camp. Joe ended his military service as a colonel.
With his father and brothers, Wyant & Sons Paper Company was formed in 1948. That company was sold to S.P. Richards Paper Company in 1967. Joe was President of the Southern Paper Trade Association, and a member of advisory committees to several companies, including Hammermill and 3M. He was president of the Atlanta Jaycees, the Harvard Club of Atlanta, both the Atlanta and the Georgia Mental Health Associations. For volunteer work in the mental health field, he was recognized as Atlanta's Young Man of the Year. He was also a long time member of the Northside Atlanta Kiwanis Club.
In 1971, Joe moved to Rochester New York, where he worked as Vice President of Alling and Cory Paper Company. While in Rochester, he served as Chairman of the Board of the Genesee Hospital and was on the vestry of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
In the early 1990's, Joe retired to the Landings in Savannah, but continued working as a consultant to the Savannah Economic Development Authority. With his wife Sarah, he co-founded the Villiage Library on Skidaway Island. He also served on the Board of St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Sarah; his three daughters; Deborah Dorsey, Catherine Renner, Isabel Trono; and his son, Joseph Wyant, Jr. He also is survived by his eleven grandchildren, and brother, Dom Wyant.
A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, January 5, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on the Isle of Hope
